bike_month_web_900x900.pngIn celebration of National Bike Month, Maui Bicycling League (MBL) is hosting a free community bicycle ride and potluck brunch on Saturday, May 20. The brunch will feature an informal presentation by Lauren Armstrong, Executive Director of the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) with opportunities for bicyclists to ask questions and provide input about bicycle-related transportation on Maui.

The start of the ride and the brunch will take place at Kanaha Beach Park on Amala Place in Kahului. Tables and tents will be set up at the grassy area near the bathrooms by the windsurfing beach (located inside the park’s third entrance on the left past the intersection of Amala Place and Kaa Street).

The potluck brunch will begin at 9:30 am, Lauren Armstrong’s presentation will help bicyclists understand the role of MPO, a federally mandated government agency that works to facilitate bicycle transportation on Maui. Immediately following the potluck brunch, Maui Bicycling League will offer a free community bicycle ride, with a beginners’ route that’s suitable for families, and a more advanced route for experienced cyclists.

TScreen Shot 2017-05-11 at 7.51.08 AMhe beginners’ route will take place on the flat, car-free North Shore Greenway and on some quiet streets in Sprecklesville, with a turnaround at Baby Beach. The ride for more advanced riders will include segments of Kuihelani Highway, Honoapiilani Highway and Kaahumanu Avenue. There will be a trained MBL ride leader at the front of each ride plus a trained MBL leader who will trail behind the group. No riders will be left behind.

All riders must wear bicycle helmets and provide their own refreshments. Also, riding with earbuds (for listening to music) is not allowed on MBL rides for safety reasons.

National Bike Month takes place in May, and works to raise awareness nationally about the many ways bicycling benefits health, the environment and communities.Screen Shot 2017-05-11 at 7.51.21 AMScreen Shot 2017-05-11 at 8.00.20 AM.png

SAVE THE DATE!  Saturday, May 27 – Memorial Ride of Silence

Bicyclists are urged to join Maui Bicycling League for a Memorial Ride of Silence on May 27th on the Mokulele Bike Path. The Ride of Silence is a worldwide event to honor bicyclists who have been killed or injured while riding. The group will ride in silence, 12 mph maximum, and wear white shirts/jerseys to honor those bicyclists. Those cyclists with headlights or tail lights on their bikes will be asked to ride with them on. The ride begins promptly at 9 am from the Target parking lot, traveling to N. Kihei and then back to Target, for a total of about 13 miles. Donations of washed fruit, baked goods, and water are being sought for refreshments at the end of the ride. For more information, to volunteer and to sign up, please email maui@hbl.org.
