Bike Your Park With Us!

iaoneedleAloha MBL members and supporters,

Join us for the first ever national Bike Your Park Day on September 24, 2016! Bring your friends and family and help them discover the bicycling opportunities in our backyard.

Maui Bicycling League (MBL) will be leading group bicycle rides for upper intermediate and beginner/intermediate riders in Central Maui to Iao Valley State Park and Maui Tropical Plantation on Saturday, September 24, 2016, starting at 8am.

We will meet at the East side of Maalaea Harbor Shops Parking Lot, closest to Carl’s Jr.

Please arrive no later than 7:45 AM, as the rides start promptly at 8:00 AM. Ride leaders from the Maui Bicycling League will do a brief ride orientation prior to departure and will lead and trail each group. These are no-drop rides where no one is left behind.

All riders must wear a properly fitting helmet, bring drinking water, and no ear buds are allowed. All rides will be on the road shoulder (varying widths) alongside normal road traffic. Not recommended for children under 16. Please wear bright clothing and use a tail light if you have one.

All rides will depart from Maalaea Parking at 8:00am, but ride groups should expect to be back at the vehicles at different times. Public restrooms are available at Maalaea and at both destinations.

1) Beginner/intermediate: Ride from Maalaea to Maui Tropical Plantation and back. This ride is eight miles round-trip, at a fairly leisurely pace, with a slightly gradual climb. There may be some headwind as we start and/or tailwind returning but it is not usually too strong in the morning. We will break at the Tropical Plantation to stretch, hydrate, and snack before the ride back.

2) Upper intermediate: Ride at a moderate pace and enjoy the scenery, approximately 10-12 mph average speed. We leave from Maalaea Parking and ride to Wailuku town, take a break and continue on a gradual, then steady climb up to Iao Valley State Park. This Intermediate level ride is approx. 18 miles round-trip. We will break at Iao Valley to stretch, hydrate, snack and enjoy the park for a bit before the nice downhill ride back.

All organized rides are free for MBL members. Non-members and visitors are invited to join the ride but are asked to consider joining MBL or making a small donation to help fund the organization’s efforts for more bicycle pathways and bike lanes on Maui. MBL rides are a fun way to ride safely in a group, meet other cyclists and learn paths around the island. Look for additional info and weather related updates at #BikeYourPark #FindYourPark#AdventureCycling
