Yes, we are asking YOU to help us advocate for justice in the sentencing of Michael Cattaneo, a driver charged with first degree negligent homicide in the death of 61-year-old cyclist Karl Hagen.

A sentencing hearing will begin at 9 am at Courtroom 4 at the Maui County Courthouse in Wailuku and will be presided over by Honorable Judge Richard T. Bissen.

The ride will begin at 7:30 am at the commuter “Park and Ride” lot on North Kihei Road, near the intersection of the Honoapiilani Highway.

The 5.3 mile long ride will travel along the Honoapiilani Highway and end around 8:30 am in Wailuku with a short sign waving and gathering of bicyclists at the courthouse. You are invited to join the ride at the start or at any point along the route.

T-shirts with the message, “I am here for Karl, Ride For Justice,” will be available free to the first 40 riders who register for the ride.

To register, email maui@hbl.org or call (808) 633-8553 ext 100.

Mr. Cattaneo was driving recklessly under the influence of drugs when his pickup truck veered into the bike lane along the Piilani Highway on April 12, 2014, and struck Karl Hagen from behind.Karl1

Maui Bicycling League is urging the judge to impose a substantial sentence for Mr. Cattaneo, and to invoke Hawaii’s DUI laws and also the state’s Vulnerable User Law which protects cyclists and pedestrians. Under the Vulnerable User Law, penalties are doubled for motorists that kill or seriously injure a vulnerable user. Vulnerable users include cyclists, pedestrians, moped riders, road workers and police officers.

Please ride for Karl. Please ride for justice. Register today to join our Dec. 4 ride. Call (808) 633-8553 ext 100 or email maui@hbl.org

Thank you,

Saman Dias

Maui Bicycling League

P.S. Many in Maui’s bicycling community knew and enjoyed spending time with Karl Hagen.

Karl was a part-year resident of Maui, and a part-year resident of Washington, where he had worked tirelessly in the business sector. Karl was an avid and accomplished athlete who loved all things outdoors, He was a dedicated father and husband, as well as a friend to many.

Karl was an eminently experienced cyclist; he was well within a marked bicycle lane; he was obeying all the rules of the road; he was helmeted.

In contrast, Mr. Cattaneo was operating a pick-up truck under the influence of drugs, he was distracted, and he was driving recklessly.

By imposing a substantial sentence, the court will send a message, not only to Mr. Cattaneo, but to Hawaii’s driving public, of the importance of this “Vulnerable User” and DUI laws and the accountability that these laws seek to enforce.

Maui Bicycling League has written a letter to Judge Bissen advocating for justice. Please join us on this ride to show support for our message. Thank you!

To register for the ride, please email maui@hbl.org or call (808) 633-8553 ext 100.
