Shibuya to give Complete Streets, Bicycles, & Positive Advocacy presentation at MBL meeting March 18th 7 to 8 p.m. at the Pacific Whale Foundation

mhi-charlene-200x250Complete Streets—and how to get them—will be explained at the Maui Bicycling League’s meeting at 7 p.m. on March 18. Guest speaker Charlene Shibuya, a former Hawaii Department of Transportation assistant director and now senior planner at Munekiyo & Hiraga, will present some examples of complete streets and some not-so-complete streets in Maui County.

As roadways are repaired and constructed in Maui, Shibuya will share how she’s worked in her capacity as a board member for the Maui Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition to urge government officials and lawmakers to consider the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. She also will speak about how NPAC has gotten involved with introducing policy change documents to the Maui County Council, like the Complete Street Resolution and the Central Maui Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan. Shibuya’s presentation will also address positive advocacy, interactions with government officials and their staff, and how to move projects forward while being sensitive to other stakeholders.

Shibuya grew up in Paia and attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Prior to her current position as a senior planner at Munekiyo & Hiraga, she worked for HDOT – Highways Division, Maui District Office, as a Maui Traffic Engineer. Shibuya is a NASCAR racing enthusiast, a former Go Kart (100cc) race drive, has a motorcycle license, and has skied at 24 different resorts in the western United States and Canada.

Please join the MBL for Shibuya’s presentation on March 18 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Pacific Whale Foundation’s lower level community room in Ma’alaea. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required.
