MBL gets a $5,000 donation and now has 31 members!

February was a busy month for the Maui Bicycling League. We’ve been working hard, side-by-side with the Hawaii Bicycling League to garner support for legislation that’s working its way through various Hawaii senate and house committees.

An update on our chapter’s progress in February: MBL received a $5,000 donation from Velocitek, a sailboat instrument company that’s headquartered on Maui, and we now have 31 members. This great news! And a huge Mahalo goes out to Alec Stewart, CEO Velocitek for the donation. The MBL’s Advocacy Committee Chair Lee Chamberlain has been advocating to increase our membership.

Our group has been in daily communication with the Hawaii Bicycling League’s directors, and we are lobbying hard for Hawaii’s Legislature to pass two key pieces of legislation to make our roads more safe for cycling and walking: the Complete Streets Bill and the Safe Passing Bill. Click the links to learn more!! We’ve circulated a couple different based petitions to bring support for these bill from Maui, and have had more than 1000 signatures in support of both bills. Thank you to ALL who have signed the petitions and made calls to our legislators. The kind of strength that comes from having this many people voice their support echoes loudly in the halls at our state capitol.

Maui team meeting with HBL_1

At the February meeting, we also worked on drafting MBL’s goals for 2015. If you have any ideas related to cycling or walking that you’d like to see included, please email us so we can start a conversation. We WANT to hear from members of the Maui community.

There’s now a “join” button on the MBL page at the website. It links to the HBL membership page to make it easier for those following our work to become members.
